LABEL SIZES & PARTS
We sometimes get inquiries about a label's
size. And we realize that some
of the pictures are deceiving (Nail Tags
look as big as Outers) because of
the way they were scanned. So here is a brief
explanation about each label
part and it's general size and other abbreviations
used to describe a label.
The INNER (I) label was
placed on the inside lid of a cigar box and
usually measures approximately
6" x 9".
The OUTER (O) label was placed on the outside of the cigar box and
usually
measures approximately 4 1/2" x 4 1/2". They sometimes
used unusual
shapes for these. These were used on boxes of 100 or more cigars.
The TOP SHEET (TS) or Flap(FL) is the sheet that was placed on top of
the
cigars to protect them from the lid. They are usually less ornate than
Inner
labels and usually measure approximately 5" x 8".
The TOP WRAP ( TW) was used on the outside of the box. They
usually
have the appearance of wood grain. They usually measure approximately
5" x 8".
The END (E) was used to cover the end of a cigar box so that the
seller
could identify them when stacked. They usually measure approximately
2
1/2" x 5 1/4".
The BACK FLAP (BF) was placed on the back of the open cigar box so
that the brand name would hang over the cigars. They usually measure
approximately 3 1/2" x 2".
The FRONT FLAP (FF) was placed on the front of the open cigar box
so
that the brand name would hang over the cigars. They usually measure
approximately 3 1/2" x 2".
CAN LABELS (C) were labels used on cigars packaged in tin cans.
They
usually measure 3 3/4" x 18" to fit around the can.
CAN TOPS or TOP LABELS (TL) were used on the tops of cigar tins.
Tops for tins usually have a 3" diameter. Sometimes they were labels
in
unusual shapes that were placed on the top of a wooden cigar box.
NAIL TAGS or SEALS (NT) or (SL) or TRADE MARKS (TM) were placed
on the lid and
the front of the box to cover the nail that sealed the lid.
Used to prevent
tampering. These vary in size from approximately
2 1/2" x 2 1/2" to
3" x 4". They sometimes used unusual shapes for
these. Some larger
SEALS could be top brand oval labels. They were
the labels placed on the outside
top of the lid (replacing wood-burning).
SAMPLES (Smp) were the labels that salesmen took around to sell
their labels. They usually have the lithographer's name & address
and
sometimes have prices. There are samples of ALL the label types.
Sometimes they
are in a book.
PROOF LABELS (PF) These labels are usually not embossed and have
marks used to align the paper to each stone and color used. Some
have a
color bar showing the colors used.
NOTICE (Ntc) stating that the manufacturer had complied with all
the required laws. And a caution not to re-use the cigar box or the
stamp on it.
They usually measure approximately 4 1/2" x 4 1/2".
EDGING (Edg) was used to cover the edges of the box. They usually
measure approximately 1" x 10" but vary.
FRONT LABEL (FL) was used to cover the front panel of the cigar
box.
They usually measure 2 1/4" x 8 1/2" but vary.
BANDS (B) were used to fit snugly around each cigar.
UNTITLED (UNT) Some labels
are untitled. Some European labels
only have titles on the Outers. *An asterisk
by a title means that we
created our own title for an untitled label.
These general measurements should help you
to determine the sizes
of the labels on our site. Some things appear larger than
they are
because we have enlarged them so that you can see all of the detail.
Of
course there are always exceptions to the rule. If the exact size
of the label
is important to you, give us a call and we will be happy to
provide the exact
sizes for you.
